Learn about the history of your souvenir coin!

Your coin year: 1971

Famous events:

What else was happening in the world in this year?

The first moon buggy rover was taken to the moon this year, on Apollo 15, the third moon landing.

This was followed by two other uses of the rover on the moon's surface and the astronauts who drove it described it as 'great fun' and like 'driving a clown car with helium-filled wheels'!

Interesting fact:

The year after:

The Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan had the first crash on the moon when he hit a rock with the moon rover!  He had to repair the bumper with some cardboard and the original broken part is now in the USA's Smithsonian museum!

The year before:

Cigarette advertisements were banned onfor the first time on TV, as people began to realise how bad they were for health.
