Your coin year: 1966

Famous events:

England won The World Cup!  They beat Germany in the final 4-2 at Wembley, watched by millions of people on TV.

What else was happening in the world in this year?

The Russians won the race to send a man-made object to the moon when their 'Luna 9' probe crash landed on to the surface.

This was soon followed by the American Surveyor 1 probe, on the 30th May 1966, a few months after Luna 9.

Interesting fact:

The year after:

The USA's Surveyor 1 probe was the first robit to take pictures of the moon's surface when it sent them back to America not long after it had landed!

This information became very useful to scientists in the moon landings that came later from 1969 onwards.
