East Germany erects the Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin to stop people leaving the Russian zone. It stands for another 30 years and causes major hardship for people with families on both sides.
Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space on the 12th April 1961.
His 'Vostok 1' spacecraft completed one orbit of the earth, and landed about two hours after launch.
He then had to bail out and land using his parachute, because the Vostok 1 was designed to crash land!

Yuri Gagarin sadly died in an airplane crash in 1968. However, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in 1969, they took a medal with his name on and placed it on the surface!
