The year before:
This was a very exciting year for the children of the Second World War. Not only did they get to see their families again, but they also got to enjoy the parties and parades that followed the end of the war!
7th-23rd March 1945: Allies cross the Rhine river into Germany.
21st April 1945: The Russian Red Army reaches Berlin, the German capital.
30th April 1945: Hitler shoots himself.
7th May 1945: Germany surrenders.
8th May 1945: VE Day: the war in Europe ends!
6th-9th August 1945: The USA drops two atomic bombs on Japan, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
2nd September 1945: Japan surrenders and the war all over the world finally comes to an end.
The German scientist who designed the deadly German V1 and V2 rockets, Wernher von Braun, went on to become the chief scientist for the American moon landings in the 1960s!
It ended! For the first time in almost 6 years, families were able to see each other again and mourn the family and friends that they had lost. In total, between 50 million and 70 million people lost their lives, mostly due to the evil of one man, Adolf Hitler.
