The year before:
The year after:
16th May 1941: The 'Blitz' finally ends after nine months of continual air raids on British towns and cities.
22nd June: Germany launches attacks against Russia.
7th December: Japan attacks Pearl Harbor in the USA.
8th December: US and UK declare war on Japan.
Towards the end of the war, the allies wanted to fool Hitler into thinking that they were going to launch attacks in a different place to where they were really going to happen, so they used hundreds of inflatable tanks and large cloth-covered boats to make it look like a massive army had been gathered in the wrong place!
In this third year of the war, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the USA on the morning of the 7th December, on the port of Pearl Harbour. The attack destroyed many American ships and resulted in the Americans joining the war with the British against both Germany and Japan.
A lot of children had started to come back to the cities after being evacuated earlier in the war, and they often came back to find their homes or schools completely destroyed. These places became known as 'bomb sites' and were used by the children as playgrounds, enabling them to act out the battles they had read or heard about.
