How much people did people earn?

The first ever Wimbledon tennis tournament is held.  The winner of the Gentleman’s singles, W. Spencer Gore, wins a trophy worth ’25 Guineas’ in Victorian money.

Invention:

If you were a poor person in Victorian times you would often end your days in a poorhouse or workhouse, where you would get paid very little and have to work very hard for hardly any food.

 

Victorian fact:

Thomas Edison invents the phonograph, the first ever recording machine.  The first words recorded are from the nursery rhyme ‘Mary had a little lamb’.

Queen Victoria was 58 years old on the 24th May and had been Queen for 40 years.
