The ‘Climbing Boys’ act comes into force, banning employers from making boys climb chimneys to clean them.

Invention:

In Victorian times, if a single man called another single woman by her first name, it was supposed to mean that he wanted to marry her.

 

Victorian fact:

The first chocolate Easter eggs are made by Fry's of Bristol.  At first chocolate had tasted bitter and was only eaten by adults until it was sweetened by adding sugar.
