The British steamer ship RMS Atlantic sinks off Nova Scotia, killing 547 people.

Invention:

Victorian fog was so bad it was very difficult to see at night.  It was called ‘smog’ or ‘pea-souper’ and was caused by all the fires that were burning in the homes and factories.

 

Victorian fact:

The typewriter is invented by Christopher Scholes.  The letters on the top row were arranged so that a salesman could type the word ‘typewriter’ with one finger using just the top line.
