An Irish man called Michael Barrett becomes the very last person ever to be hanged in England, for blowing up a prison wall and killing 12 people in an escape attempt.

Invention:

The transportation of criminals to Australia officially ended in this year. Before 1868, many criminals were shipped abroad even for minor crimes such as pickpocketing or stealing food.  

 

 

Victorian fact:

The first traffic lights were installed outside the British Houses of Parliament in London, by the railway engineer J. P. Knight, on December 10th 1868.
