A housekeeper earned 74p a week, which was 14 shillings and 10 pence in Victorian money.

How much people did people earn?

Queen Victoria makes her first major public appearance since the death of Prince Albert when she attends the State Opening of Parliament.

Invention:

Plans were being made at this time to build The Royal Albert Hall, which was completed in 1871.  It was built on land bought from the money that was made from the Great Exhibition of 1851, and is still earning money today.  

 

 

Victorian fact:

A new and improved Atlantic telegraph cable is successfully laid between Britain and America by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s famous ship ‘The SS Great Eastern’.
