The Crimean war starts between Britain (and other European countries, called her 'allies') against Russia, over the land of the old Turkish, Ottoman empire.

Invention:

A Victorian teacher's job included not just teaching, but also many other duties such as filling lamps, cleaning chimneys, and trimming the wicks of lamps.

Victorian fact:

The hypodermic syringe with a plunger is simultaneously developed by the French veterinary surgeon Charles Gabriel Pravaz and the Scottish doctor Alexander Wood.
